Motion components. Transfer.
Any movement can be divided into three components: rotation, spinning, and transfer.
Transfer - center of mass movement, perpendicular to the staff's rotation plane. Continuous staff rotation in one plane with closed grip is impossible (if you do not have bearings instead of the wrist joint), thus you have to transfer. In simple cases staff carried over to the other side relative to the body. For more complicated movements, the inside planes are used.

Spining - staff's center of mass movement in the rotation plane. Common trajectories are: point, circle or line segment. This movement involve whole hands.

How to hold the staff for spinning (there are other methods for throws or contact).
In case of Spinning, so-called closed central grip used 99% of the time, where Staff's center of mass located between the thumb and forefinger. Try to hold loosely. Thus, during spinning, hand sometimes squeezed into a fist, and sometimes all the fingers except the thumb and forefinger released, the palm can be opened. Try to keep staff rotation plane clean and do not turn out the wrist. Many movements involve whole body, not just the arms
